Why a vintage cabinet beats a new one
New china and display cabinets in solid wood are some of the priciest furniture in the store — $900 to $2,000 and up — and the budget versions swap in thin glass, flimsy backs and particleboard frames.
Vintage cabinets were built when glass-front storage was a point of pride: solid wood frames, thick glass, shelves that hold a full set of china. Refinished by hand, they bring that quality home for $139–$499. Painted pieces include matching touch-up paint on request.
What to look for in a china or curio cabinet
- Glass intact and secure in every door — check edges and how firmly each pane sits.
- Doors that hang even and latch cleanly.
- Shelves present and sturdy — glass shelves should be thick enough for china, with solid supports.
- If it’s lighted, the light should work — ask to see it on.
- A solid stance and real wood back — tall pieces shouldn’t rack or sway.
- Useful storage below — drawers and cabinets for linens and serving pieces.
